Case Studies
In London an industrial estate contains 28 businesses. Of varied size, they cover a wide range of sectors, although the estate was formerly a light engineering manufacturing heartland. The local Business Link, supported by the Local Authority and funded from the European Regional Development Fund, introduces a new scheme:
- a free computer
- one year ISP linkage via a regeneration scheme network
- one year free training for any staff.
This micro-network is meant to link up the Companies and increase electronic trading and IT skills. After one year only 9 of the Companies have signed up for the micro network and as yet there are no real inter-firm linkages or training take-up.
- What went wrong?
- Why were conditions not right for the project?
- How could the EU project have been designed differently?
